The Dominicans and Vatican II: A Day of Friend-raising and Faith-sharing

1381332_604981032871834_144672308_nWhat a blessed retreat day we spent learning about the Dominicans and their influence in the Church and in society leading up to Vatican II!  On October 12, 2013, the “Amigos del Instituto Congar” organized a day of reflection at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in San Antonio, to begin to conclude the Year of Faith.  Fr. Wayne Cavalier, OP, PhD, was the facilitator of the day.

Fr. Cavalier began the reflection by presenting key information about St. Dominic, founder of the Order of Preachers, and by helping the participants reflect on how the Church is the same and different during St. Dominic’s time and our time today.   He continued the reflection with an exposition of other key French Dominican theologians and their influence in the Church: Henri-Dominique Lacordaire, Antonin-Gilbert Sertillanges, Marie-Dominique Chenu, Louis-Joseph Lebret, Pierre André Liégé, among others.  Fr. Cavalier concluded the day by speaking about Yves Congar, his role and influence in Vatican II and the richness of his theological message. The participants’ reflections led us to the conclusion that these Dominicans where prophets with a message to the Church community of their time that transcended to Vatican II’s documents and that their message is very much needed today.

Participants included a good number of members of different Dominican Laity groups from San Antonio and Corpus Christi, Texas.  Other local faithful were in attendance, as well as the leader of the Archdiocesan Union of Holy Name Societies.  Those in attendance were invited to join the mission of the Congar Institute by supporting fundraising and marketing efforts, and in that way, promoting the excellent formation that lay leaders in pastoral ministry seek and deserve.

If you were unable to attend the event, you can order a copy of the complete conference by Fr. Wayne Cavalier.  This can be a great resource for your reflection and learning about the Dominicans and Vatican II, and it can also make a great Christmas gift for your loved ones.  The DVD is only $10 each plus $3.50 (each) for shipping and handling.  To order your copy today, send an email congarinstitute@ost.edu or call 210-341-1366 ext. 269.

We would like to extend a special thanks to members of the “Amigos del Instituto Congar” Committee, for making this event possible:  Fr. Wayne Cavalier, OP; Lizett Farias, Lea Kochanek, Cindy Martinez, OP; Gordon Pfeil, OP; Alejandro Siller; Mary Lou Thompson, OP; and Loye Young.  THANK YOU!
