Building Intercultural Competence for Ministers (BICM) workshops

BICM group

We are very happy and motivated to have the opportunity to serve the Church with new programs such as BICM. We have been invited and licensed by USCCB Secretariat for Cultural Diversity in the Church, to help facilitate more workshops that are needed to prepare communities to share their parishes with diverse cultures and grow in unity. This program is a formation and pastoral priority for our Bishops due to the growing need in the Church to prepare ministerial leadership to serve communities with diversity of cultures.
This past October the Congar Institute facilitated a BICM workshop in Spanish at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, New Jersey. As part of the team of facilitators presenting this workshop, we had Mrs. Laura Lopez, Sr. Ruth Bolarte IHM, Sr. Amelia Breton SBS, Sr. Mercedes Castillo, Dr. Antonio Ramirez and Alejandro Siller-Gonzalez. This was the first BICM for the College and it was the second BICM presentation in Spanish for the Institute this year.
The Congar Institute also facilitated the first BICM in English at Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri, from November 5 to 8, 2014. The facilitators for this workshop were: Mrs. Christi King, Sr. Ruth Bolarte IHM, Mrs. Laura Lopez, Mr. Marcos Martinez, Alejandro Siller-Gonzalez and Fr. Wayne Cavalier OP. Aquinas Institute of Theology has embarked on a substantial program of cultural competency formation for faculty, staff, students, and trustees. Their goals are to model cultural competency as a school and to send forth culturally competent ministerial leaders for the Church. The BICM workshop will assist them in this effort. We are proud of the commitment of both institutions to assist the Church in developing intercultural competency in ministerial leaders, and for our contribution in the formation of such leadership.
