Diversity is another hallmark of God’s creation. Life thrives in different forms, shapes and under all type of circumstances, sometimes unimaginable for the human mind. Diversity is therefore a hallmark for God’s kingdom. Embracing and celebrating it, it is the mission of all the baptized.
In many ways, our faith communities are evidence of this diversity, especially cultural diversity. We are One Body formed by individuals from different backgrounds and cultures. Cultural diversity enriches us all but also presents us with a few challenges. Those who serve in ministry must be prepared to welcome cultural diversity and transform its challenges into blessings. The Congar Institute for Ministry Development offers many opportunities for those who desire to learn how to embrace the gift of cultural diversity in their communities.
On January 16, 2021, Lay Ecclesial Ministry students from the Diocese of Salt Lake engaged in a Zoom course under the Institute’s guidance to study and appreciate cultural diversity. I was the Institute’s Resource Person for the course. Students were asked to study and analyze different ministerial scenarios (case studies) where cultural diversity was presented as a challenge. This exercise allowed them to identify the challenge and frame it under the Church’s mission. Students developed cultural competencies that will not only help them to bring the Good News to all, but also foster faith communities that celebrate cultural diversity.
