The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God has come near; repent and believe in the good news. (Mark 1: 15)
These words by Jesus are our first encounter with the reality of Ordinary Time, and the culmination of all the reflection and celebration of the recent Christmas season. Jesus starts his mission in Galilee and called a group of fishermen to follow him. Simon, Andrew, James and John are the first disciples who immediately accepted the message of conversion and belief in the Good News of Jesus Christ. The disciples are called to be with Jesus, and evangelize in his name.
The mission of the Son of God was never intended to be a solitary one; from the beginning his message encourages collaboration and the calling of specific people to participate in the mission. The Christian vocation calls to surrender to Jesus, identify with him and be committed to work for the Gospel. This call is extended to all time, even to our own, calling us on this first month of the year 2022 to persevere in our call and participate in Christ’s mission. The Christian community is more than ever in need of generous, joyful, and holy people to be disciples and learn and give to others the fruit of our contemplation. Therefore, let us be inspired by today’s Gospel and, as the Dominican St. Raymond of Penyafort said: May the God of love and peace set your hearts at rest and speed you on your journey.
