As I read today’s passage from the Gospel of Luke (8:16-18) my mind was drawn to the images of light and a lamp. Lamps help us to see in the darkness; they guide our way as we try to avoid stumbling. God illuminates the darkness in our lives, filling us with spiritual light, helping us to see the light of Christ. Jesus is the light of the world. His desire is to guide us on our journey. His light offers us the possibility to achieve our full potential. Our actions are ways we can be lamps for others.
How am I a “light bearer” of Christ our light, enabling others to see God through my actions? Do I exude the joy of living in God’s light for those God has placed on my path? How am I light as I experience challenges from COVID that have been with us for so many months? The resurgence is a struggle for many to shine through the darkness; how do I respond to the challenges? Have I hidden my light under a basket during these times of fear and hesitation due to COVID? How can I safely allow my light to shine for those God has placed in my life?
Take some time to reflect on these questions and strive to be the light for others as we face the challenges of our current daily lives.
Gracious God, guide me by Your light so that I may radiate Your light to others in word and deed. Amen.
The designation “martyr” is rooted in the word “witness,” another way of saying “bearer of the light of Christ for others”. We learn much through the study of saints; take some time with the link below to learn about the mostly lay Korean Martyrs, Saints Andrew Kim Taegon and Paul Chong Hasang, and their companions, our saints for the day, who were courageous bearers of Christ’s light in extremely dark times.
