In yesterday’s gospel reading (Lk. 12:13-21), Jesus urges his followers to treasure “what matters to God”. Today’s gospel passage (Mt. 14:13-21) begins with 3 sentences that bear witness to treasuring.
Grieving, Jesus withdrew to treasure his cousin John the Baptist, whom Herod had killed. Who have you, in your grieving treasured during these virus-laden years?
The crowds, treasuring Jesus, followed him on foot. Who have you treasured for helping you during this difficult time?
When Jesus stepped ashore and saw the crowds, he treasured them. When, during this time of Coronavirus, have you been moved by the suffering humanity around you, and responded by treasuring them?
Further on in the passage, Jesus treasured and then shared the offering that had seemed too paltry to matter: 5 loaves and 2 fish. And that fed the crowd. How have these past 3+ years changed your perspective about what seems too paltry to offer, too paltry to matter?
How has treasuring served you as a tool for hope?
