We’ve chosen the most challenging, most wonderful signpost. We’ve claimed the Crucified and Risen Jesus as THE Signpost… THE Signpost that is the depth of meaning in all other signposts; THE Signpost prevailing in and beyond all other signposts; THE Signpost which, somehow, is simultaneously the most hidden and the most obvious.
Easter Week’s liturgical readings indicate the sheer chaos that followed Jesus’ rising: chaos within persons and chaos within their community. Thanks to Jesus’ resurrection, we know that we can belong in chaos; it won’t rip us apart. Rather, chaos can serve as an entryway into a whole new level of being. When has chaos been an entryway for you, into better knowing the Risen Jesus, the disciples around you, the sacred community, and this world?
This week’s readings also point to joy. It’ll take the entire Easter season – well, actually, our whole Easter lives – to explore this joy and let it seep into our core. How have you grown in joy over the years?
And these readings beckon us to know our unknowable Risen Lord. May you have an Easter season of staring at Jesus.
Chaos, joy, and knowing the unknowable: at least potentially, signposts of THE Signpost.
