Reflection Second Sunday of Easter or
Sunday of Divine Mercy-Cycle A
Yesterday the Church celebrated the Sunday of Divine Mercy. We are called to contemplate the fulness of the Paschal Mystery – Christ’s Passion, Death and Resurrection.
God desires to forgive our sins and offer His mercy. Divine Mercy is the form that God’s eternal love takes when He reaches out to us in the midst of our misery and our brokenness.
The message of Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us and wants us to approach Him in constant prayer, repenting of our sins while asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and upon the world. He wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us to others, extending our love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us.
The Gospel from John we heard yesterday is the story of Thomas who had to touch and see before he believed. Thomas speaks for all of us at one time or another. He speaks for us when our prayer life is weak, when doubt is strong, when fear and mistrust overwhelm us. Anyone who has ever struggled with faith, or felt distant from God, can find a kindred spirit in St. Thomas. Jesus understands our humanity, our limitations, our doubts. When Jesus returned to the locked room He did so for Thomas. Jesus is always there for His lost sheep…for us.
As we look to the week ahead, know that God is there for us on our faith journey and pray the words, “My Lord and my God, I trust in you.”
