After the transfiguration of Jesus in front of three of his disciples he descended from the mount where he met a large crowd: his other disciples, some of his enemies and some people who wanted to see him. Out of the crowd emerged a father who had brought his son to be cured. The boy had suffered for a long time.
Everything the father said is like a prayer. First the father asked for Jesus' help and compassion for his son and then affirmed his faith and at the same time asked that it increase. Jesus for his part asked the reason for the discussion; the mere presence of Jesus bothered the spirit; then Jesus ordered the spirit to come out; and finally took the boy by the hand.
The themes that stand out are faith and prayer. But there is more. For me the important thing is love. In the midst of the tumult and discussion, paternal love appears. Love comes from God because He is love (1 Jn 4:8). Jesus shows love through compassion. Faith and prayer are nothing without love. That is why for James, faith without works (“of love”) is nothing (Friday’s 1st reading: James 2: 17). We want to grow in faith and prayer: let us love one another!
