Good-byes lead to hellos that we probably do not have in mind when we’re caught up in the good-bye. These “hellos” may include new people, new situations, new experiences of ourselves and our world, new hopes, new challenges, and new chapters of our lives.
Jesus’ apostles witnessed his good-bye to them at the Ascension. That good-bye included Jesus’ promise of the Holy Spirit. Now, we’re familiar with descriptions of the coming of the Holy Spirit; but at the moment of Ascension’s Good-bye, surely Jesus’ disciples could not have imagined Pentecost’s gigantic Hello.
Throughout this time of COVID, we’ve been saying our good-byes to people, experiences of being together, and ways of working and managing tasks of daily living. We’ve probably also been saying good-bye to certain habits, dreams, and some favorite ways of being oneself. In God-engendered hope, let’s ponder the Spirit’s hellos that we have experienced, and prepare to welcome even more hellos as they come. What are hellos I’ve already experienced during this time of COVID? And how do these hellos help my hope to grow?
