As I reflected on the Gospel from John (John 8:1-11) we heard yesterday for this Fifth Week of Lent, my thoughts went to how are we, as a Church, welcoming people back to our parishes in person at Mass. Are we doing it with a softness, or with a tone of severity and judgement? Are we being the face of God for those returning with open arms and unconditional love? Remember, when we point a finger in judgement there are three fingers pointing back at us. We have all sinned; not a one of us is immune. God reminds us that we can begin anew with hopeful hearts.
The magnificent scene at the end of the Gospel spoke loudly to me. Saint Augustine says it well, “And two were left… one filled with misery, and one filled with mercy.” There is so much misery in our world; a merciful Church offering hope is desperately needed. How can we be more like Jesus? What message is Jesus writing on the sand for us? How can we be more hopeful, loving, and compassionate? How can we be hope for someone in misery?
As Lent comes to a close, perhaps we can take some time and read again Gaudium et Spes (Joy & Hope) from the Second Vatican Council. The major themes contained in it are: marriage and culture, socio-political and economic life, bonds among nations, and war and peace—themes worthy of our time and prayer. May God Bless us on this journey.
