We have traditionally dedicated the month of May to Mary. As we enter this month, I want to look to Mary of Nazareth as the mother of our peoples who suffer and bleed in migrations. When she sings the Magnificat, she sets her gaze on God’s infinite mercy and humbleness, while singing a hymn of liberation and social justice. In the midst of the terrible migrations of our world, the Magnificat reminds us that God is on the side of the humble and the oppressed. He accompanies them as they cross the deserts, rivers, fences... He is with every brother and sister who leaves their home to fight for a more dignified and just life. He accompanies them when they feel alone and dejected, sustains with his strength those who fight against oppression and injustice, blesses those who offer theme appropriate gesture and word as they walk.
The Magnificat highlights the reversal of power structures in the world. "God overthrows the powerful from the throne and exalts the humble, the hungry he fills them with goods and the rich he dismisses them empty". Also today, we can continue to believe that one day, the unjust order of the world will be reversed and it will be possible for the wolf and the lamb to dwell together because no one will harm the Holy Mount.
