Signposts On The Way

What is important?

I remember when Covid started at the church and there was a concern about the buildings. What can we do with all those empty rooms? How can we keep them clean and save? How are we going to maintain them?

Time has passed, and nowadays, no one seems to be scared of Covid. Now we are worried about how we can fill those rooms with people. In the gospel, speaking about the Temple of Jerusalem, Jesus said, “…the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.” (Lk 21:6). I understand Jesus to mean that there are matters that are important and others that are not, but for different reasons we put these other matters among the first.

It is not difficult for me to realize this when I am in conversation with church people where we discuss about how many people returned to church after Covid. But being worried about the number of worshipers that have or have not returned, seems to not be enough according to the gospel. Indeed, Jesus said a little later in the same gospel, “Before all this happens… they will seize and persecute you… because of my name (v 12).”

This means that what really matters is our witness of Jesus. It is not the quantity but the quality that matters. Is our witness of Jesus better now than it was before Covid? We can gather to pray now. How have we grown in Jesus Christ during these years of lockdown? What is important for us these days?
