We are in Year Two of the National Eucharistic Revival sponsored by the US Bishops. There is nothing meant to unite us as a Catholic Community as powerfully as Christ and the Eucharist.
Pope Francis proclaimed at the Youth Day in Portugal that Jesus is for “ ¡Todos! ¡Todos! ¡Todos!” For all! He invited thousands of young people gathered with him to say ¡Todos! ¡Todos! ¡Todos. I believe this about Jesus with my whole being. I rejoice in such mercy and unconditional, universal love.
“…in the church,” Pope Francis continued, “there is space for everyone, and when there isn’t, please work so that there is…also for who makes mistakes, for who falls, for who(m) it is difficult. That is the church, the mother of all, there is room for all.”
I long for the Day of the Eternal Eucharist when all are invited and welcomed, and the sinners and saints sit next to one another, or perhaps are the same people! While longing, I hear Pope Francis exhorting me to help bring this about. As I receive Eucharist, I want to “become what I receive”, as St. Augustine counselled.
Pope Francis continued the challenge: “…we, too, need a burst of light if we are to face the darkness of the night, the challenges of life, the fears that plague us, and the gloom that often overtakes us. That light…has a name…. the light is Jesus himself.”
We who are connected with the Congar Institute value our call to be missionary disciples, to work for the day of inclusion of Todos in the Lord. Our work lies before us…
