This Little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine! Let it shine! Let it Shine! Let it Shine!
This was one of my favorite childhood songs that I taught my children when they were growing up. It reminds me of a memory of a family reunion with in-laws at Estes Park in Colorado. It was a beautiful evening in that gorgeous setting. The sky was full of stars and there was a half-moon out. Sitting around a campfire with my family were Great-Grandma Josie, Grandma Lina, many Tia’s and Tio’s, lots of cousins, and other family members.
My three-year-old daughter Mika brought me my guitar. With a huge smile on her face, she started singing “This Little Light of Mine” with gusto, and everyone joined in. We could see everyone singing along and the song brought joy and tranquility to all. Little Mika let her light shine among us and shed light on our darkness. That night she brought light to everyone.
Today’s Gospel came to life with a three-year-old child who shed light and joy for all: “for there is nothing hidden that will not become visible and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light.” Everywhere I go I’m going to let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!
