Reflection Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Cycle B
In the Gospel of Mark we heard a man’s urgent question for Jesus, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Perhaps a question we heard before or wondered about? Is his concern about what will happen when he dies? We feel his desperation. We also know this is a good man, a pious man who has kept the Commandments. He has many possessions, but we know that will not keep him from death. Death is an inevitability for us all…. No one lives forever.
This man is in need of healing, Jesus knows him well, as He knows each one of us. When Jesus tells the man to sell all of his possessions, the man walks off shocked and grieving. He asked Jesus a question and what told what to do…. How many times have we asked Jesus a question and desire a response??? Often not hearing a direct answer… This man got a direct response…. Perhaps it was not what he wanted to hear…. What one thing do we lack? Perhaps we need to reflect on loosening our grip on material things that we feel is so important and discern what God is calling us to hold on to. Let go of the earthly burdens we place on ourselves.
What must we do to inherit eternal life??? Take the hand of Jesus, follow Him. It is an invitation He offers to each and every one of us
Gracious God, I try to follow You faithfully.
At times I struggle. Help me to give up my earthly loves that come before you. Guide me on my journey. Amen.
