On February 16, 2023 the Congar Institute honored KENS5 News Anchor Deborah Knapp and Cuban-American Theologian Roberto S. Goizueta with the 2023 Yves Congar Award. Deborah Knapp has been a pillar of the San Antonio community for over 30 years. She has dedicated herself to using her gifts and talents for charity work and building up the San Antonio community. Dr. Goizueta is a published theologian who has given his life’s work to theological reflection on the everyday faith of the U.S. Hispanic Catholic Community and the prophetic gift that it is to the larger faith community. Much of his early research was done among the Hispanic Catholic Community here at San Antonio’s San Fernando Cathedral.
The Gala also hosted a beautiful silent auction, followed with dinner catered by Lisa’s Mexican Restaurant, live music provided by Galo Gutiérrez, and the awards presentation. Each unique statuette that is the Yves Congar Award is designed and sculpted by local artist Theresa Northway, who was present at the Gala with her family. It is inspired by the vision St. Dominic’s mother, Blessed Jane d’Aza had when she was pregnant with him of a dog with a burning torch in its mouth running around lighting the world on fire. She understood this to be a sign that he would be a great preacher of the Gospel. The event was Emceed by Randy Escamilla, who is the Director of Communications for the Southside Independent School District.
The evening was full of laughter, prayer, and friendship.
